Surgical Tooling & Guides

Creative Solutions for Minimally Invasive Surgery & Training

Surgical tooling is a small customized tool made from a sterilisable material that can be used in a patient or guides your saw and/or drill in the planned direction. Our steering technology offers optimal navigation to the surgical target. We are continuously developing new applications for minimally invasive surgery, in close collaboration with R&D partners in hospitals and universities. In addition, we keep ourselves updated with ongoing research on cutting edge surgery and precision mechanics. Our approach to surgical guides is a patient-matched platform for precise placement of implants, microdebrider or suction needles. With a pedicle screw placement guide (for example), surgeons are allowed to determine their preoperative 3d plan, based on CT images of the patient’s spine. To transfer this plan to the actual procedure, we design surgical (cutting) guides. The surgical guide fits exactly on a predetermined part of the patient’s bone or tissue, making sure you cut and drill at the right place, under the right angle (and to the right depth). This innovative concept combines several different features to offer potential benefits to both the surgeon and the patient.

Trocars and Access Instruments

For endoscopic surgery, trocar and other access aids are inserted in inclusions to allow for miniature or narrow medical devices such as those used in ophthalmic surgery to be inserted and guided through exact spots. Laparoscopic instruments rely on such guides for training and stability during long and intricate procedures.

Our solutions produce novel access instruments with unique features that include steerable, cutting, heating, electric and magnetic stimulation for traceability and active response. A unique combination of a movable tip and 360˚ rotation provides maximum freedom in the surgical area, minimizing strain for the surgeon. With our digital manufacturing and design tools, we complement rapid fabrication of custom-made, function guides that can be integrated in any robotic-assisted surgery.

Custom-Made Surgical Tooling

Custom Surgical instruments are specialized tools designed for procedures where existing or OEM tools are limited. They are the best ally for surgeons and innovative medical professionals. Surgical tooling for implants are good examples of optimum, personal healthcare offered in a patient-specific operation. Customized implants to suit an individual patient's anatomy and requirements have become a reality. For custom made surgical guides, the dental industry is essentially the largest as everything is made to order based on the way a patient bites, chews and eats. Our guides increase accuracy in implant positioning while reducing the risk of pedicles violation. By using guides in implants, you reduce X-ray doses, overall time by about 30% vs free hand techniques and the number of revision surgeries are also reduced by increasing the screw position accuracy. Our platform includes an interactive 3d planning tool for reliable targeting and trajectory identification.

Surgical VR & Simulators

MetaMetry offers a modular training design incorporating proven learning theories to support competency-based training initiatives. Using accurate simulations that recreate actual OR experiences, it creates a depth of understanding by bridging the gap between actual pathology and imaging for true case-based learning. Deliver more cost-effective and accessible training on demand, anywhere, anytime. Augment existing bioskills training with high-fidelity VR to train more surgeons, faster. Surgical guides can be pre-manufactured through additive manufacturing to fit any simulator to improve surgical confidence and readiness. Rather than committing a large investment on temporary surgical parts, we offer cost effective solutions for real-life accuracy models to scale training, reduce cost and speed the adoption of new implants and procedures.

Get Your Procedure Right with Surgical Tooling, Guides, Training & Planning

With extensive knowledge of surgical techniques and medical device industry, our team of design engineers works closely with surgeons to understand individual requirements and develop bespoke solutions. On request, we can assist you with a full pre-operative surgical plan, including the cutting planes, drill holes and their respective angles. To transfer this plan to the actual procedure, we design surgical (cutting) guides. A pre-operative virtual planning and the associated surgical guide(s) will assist you to drill and saw in the right direction, according to plan. “Backward” planning can be used to find the best position for the implants. For example, a surgeon starts by predefining the optimal position of the mandibula, which determines the void that needs to be bridged by the bone graft. Taking advantage of our comprehensive in-house capabilities and network of external partners, your surgeon’s medical device will be manufactured, finished and evaluated to ensure it meets all expectations and requirements. With digital manufacturing, we can speed up procedures and increase your confidence in implants by providing rapid production of guides, training models and trocars with 3D printing, 3D rendering of diagnostic imaging and years of medical-grade instrument fabrication. From design to manufacture final release version, we ensure a ready to use, quality-assured device.
